THE LEGEND OF WAE REBO
(The existence of Wae Rebo which well-known as a village above the sky is still well kept on mind of the elders for its origin on the past and it’s handed down from a generation to others younger ones using oral tradition. Ones upon a time, there lived a young man in Minangkabau of west Sumatra who was handsome smart and charismatic. The man named Maro. As he grew younger and on the period of trying to find his truly spirit of himself, he had a hobby which was famous played at the moment namely buffalo fight.

Maro had strong and agile buffalo which was also bruiser. Ones, there was a big competition with a man who had never been a loser. This man supposed fully to be the winner on the last in which his had to fight Maro’s buffalo unfortunately It was out of spectators’ expectation, Maro’s buffalo killed his in short. The buffalo struck its adversary under the stomach thus its large intestine came out and the stage became very much bloody. The spectators were amazed then they cheered on Maro’s victory. However, the men who eventually lose became extremely in anger, he tricked the people to acknowledge that Maro fought dishonestly. The people were easily influenced then they planned to kill Maro, fortunately he could escape and in order to be safe, he did what young man of Minangkabau was used to do. He decided to leave his lovely hometown wandering to a place where he could go on his life within.

Sailing to the west, Maro tied up to Gowa of Sulawesi he then traveled to the south and finally arrived in Flores. In Flores, he had got perfectly new situation that needed him to adapt. He moved again and again. He was in Bajo, then went to a new place called Waraloka a village of south Labuan Bajo, because of feeling unsafe, he sailed again further to the south of Flores and stayed in a village called Nangapa’ang which the location is near Dintor now.
One day, when he was in Nangapa’ang, his sight was attracted by a billowing smoke far from the mountain. He really wondered about and it brought him to a village called Todo. Being a foreign, Maro was so much luck. Mostly, he was accepted in every single village he entered. This what he experienced in Todo village as well.

On the third day of his coming, the villagers held an election for their new leader. Due to his charismatic, Maro was nominated by them and he was chosen. Maro didn’t feel suitable to be, so the villagers chose someone else instead. In short, Maro was considered as one of their tribesman who afterward was inspired to build the same house shape as they had got.
After staying for quit a while, Maro moved to stay in Popo village where He stayed for a long time too till one they he triggered a big problem with a village next door. They came in crowd to murder Maro, luckily he was protected by the villagers of Popo, nevertheless it didn’t stop them coming to reach their mission.
Here was the most interesting of the story...

One night, when Maro was sleeping, a civet came and perched on the roof of his house. It seemed to talk to him something. “Hi civet, if you want to bring me an important message, make a sound and come down by my side” said Maro.
Maro was really surprised by the civet. It came down to him and told him to leave the village as soon as possible. He believed what it said then went away. As he left the village following it, Popo village surrounded and attacked and the houses burned all.
At the moment, the civet led Maro to a village called Modo. Staying here, Maro didn’t stop making troubles which made him would be killed again. Fortunately, he also helped by his friend named Bimbang to escape from a chase.
On the way of next moving, Maro and Bimbang were separated and the track on what Maro walked guided him to a place where he then stayed in, that was Ndara village, but it was not the last stop. In short, he once stayed in Golo Damu where he met a girl from Lembor to be his wife, continued to Golo Pandu.

Eventually, one starry night in Golo Pandu, Maro dreamt about meeting a man who asked him to live to a new empty place he pointed. He agreed to do. It was safe, fertile and hiding above the sky called Wae Rebo. Maro and his wife lived there happily together with their children and in order to appreciate the civet help previously, their offspring were forbidden to kill civets till Todays inhabitants who are his 18th generation descendants.
